His performance so far reflects his success at transforming the Republican Party in his image. The most important message from the primaries is the most straightforward: Trump’s coalition is the dominant faction in the GOP. Like McConnell’s announcement, the choices by GOP elected officials in the primary contest signal their acknowledgement of the party’s direction. The share of GOP elected officials who have endorsed Haley isn’t anywhere near as large as her share of the total vote. But a deeper factor also explains the imbalance in support among GOP elected officials.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, an unwavering voice of moderate conservatism and the first woman to serve on the nation’s highest court, died Friday. When she retired, Justice Clarence Thomas, a consistent conservative, called her “an outstanding colleague, civil in dissent and gracious when in the majority.”She could, nonetheless, express her views tartly. “I had never expected or aspired to be a Supreme Court justice," she said. The retired justice was relieved that he was comfortable and happy at the center, according to her son, Scott. “It has been a great privilege indeed to have served as a member of the court for 24 terms,” the justice wrote.

Similarly, Clinton’s edge was in the single digits over Obama in South Carolina at this stage of the campaign. Of course, winning the primary is one thing for Trump, who has led in almost every single Republican primary poll published in the past eight years. A poll out last week from Marquette University Law School had Biden and Trump tied percentage-wise (with a statistically insignificant few more respondents choosing Trump). The good news for Democrats is that general election polling, unlike primary polling, is not predictive at this point. But for now, the chance that Trump is president in less than two years time is a very real possibility.

This would normally be the part of the story where I’d tell you that a third-party candidate has little chance of winning next year – and I am telling you that. It’s also true, however, that 2024 is shaping up to be the kind of election Biden could lose primarily because of a third-party candidacy. This year it’s pretty clear that such a portion of third-party voters probably already exists for a simple reason: Biden and Trump are historically unpopular. The headlines and the fears Democrats have about a third-party candidate are, at least partially, a tacit acknowledgement that Biden is unpopular. Think about recent vice presidents who have tried to upgrade their positions. That doesn’t seem like a particularly high success rate, though we should remember that many vice presidents (like Cheney) don’t run. About 55% of vice presidents who ran for their party’s nomination became the head of their party’s ticket. This shift reflected election officials’ growing concerns about foreign interference in elections and the need to have some way to audit tallies. To be sure, machines are still integral to the election process even when votes are cast on paper ballots.
